SHELTON SCHOOL DISTRICT 19 was housed in a four-room building
starting in 1882. The expanded 10-room building was used until 1912
when it was cut in half and moved out. Shelton celebrates its 150th

THIS WEEK IN HISTORY: Officials cry fowl over fire alarm
There is considerable sickness in this vicinity just at present,
but most of it is not of a serious nature. A physician tells the
Hub that there is less typhoid fever in the city at present than
there has been for the past several years.
The celery crop is said to be looking fine, and some of it will
be ready for market in another week or two. Those farms that were
not touched by the hail are extra fine and the yield, of a good
quality, is expected to be large. The fire bell rang at 12:30 today (Aug. 11). It is supposed to
have been the work of pigeons that roost in the tower and have once
or twice before interfered with the workings of the fire alarm.89 Years Ago — 1922Two representatives of the U.S. Department of Agriculture have
been making a canvass of Buffalo County farms during the past week,
hunting out the common barberry hedges that are spreaders of rust
and cause great damage annually in wheat and other small grain
acreage. They found only one patch of barberry, and it was
primarily removed and destroyed. The campaign for funds with which to pave Central Avenue south
from 16th Street to the Platte River Bridge rounded the turn into
the home stretch when the committee announced that more than
$15,000 had been subscribed. The goal is $28,700, which is 60
percent of project costs. The skating rink and dance floor, located at First Avenue and
24th Street, has been transferred to Hastings where it will be
operated during the Adams County Fair.64 Years Ago — 1947The Ravenna chief of police faced a new problem recently. Two
transients were lodged in the jail for obstructing traffic. It so
happens the city auditorium is adjacent to the city jail. A dance
was in progress. Late in the evening, the occupants of the
strongbox demanded that the dance and attending confusion be
stopped and the orchestra silenced. They contended that they were
guests of the city and had a right to expect peace and quiet so
they could get some sleep and rest. The dance went right on.
However, the visitors were allowed an extra hour for sleep the next
morning. The poles, crossarms and wires of the former Postal Telegraph
Co. in central Nebraska are being taken down and will be removed
across the entire state. The company was merged with the Western
Union Telegraph company during the last war, and the line has not
been use since that time. The president of Nebraska Central
Telephone Co. purchased the poles and crossarms between Kearney and
Shelton. They will be used to rebuild the telephone lines around
Shelton and Gibbon.Between 4,000 and 5,000 people sought relief from the heat at
Harmon Park. Every table was taken as family picnics were the order
of the day. The swimming pool drew a record number as more than
1,200 were admitted. This Week in History is compiled from Hub files by News Clerk
