Blast kills worker at metal recycle
Post on: 2011-09-05 By: admin
Without a key to a steel strongbox, solving the mystery of what was inside only could have ended in tragedy.
And Saturday it did, with the death of George R. Rininger, 50, of Hooversville.
Rininger was cutting the padlock off the box containing black powder when it exploded Friday, sending him to a Pittsburgh hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was tackling the lock with a cutting torch as an employee of metal recycling company Kantner IronSteel.
The box was brought in by a customer, Kantner Iron owner John Toth said Thursday.
Rininger was cutting it open to see what was inside before the customer left.
“It could have been full of dirt, it could have been full of money,” Toth said.
Sadly, the box discovered while cleaning up a New Baltimore-area farm contained perhaps 75 pounds of explosives.
